RAS Siberian Branch and Sakha/Yakutia Government Open the New Arctic Station on Samoylov Island
On 23 September 2013, the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) and the Government of the Republic of Sakha/Yakutia held a joint session to officially open the new Arctic research station on Samoylov Island. The opening ceremony was attended by the Vice President of Yakutia, Dmitry Glushko, the Deputy Chairman of SB RAS, Academician Mikhail Epov, the Chairman of Far-Eastern Branch RAS, Academician Valentin Sergienko, the Head of the Potsdam Research Unit of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Prof. Hans-Wolfgang Hubberten, and the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Novosibirsk, Neithart Hoefer-Wissing. The official delegation was welcomed by the Head of Samoylov Station, Fedor Sellyakhov, the Director of the Arctic Centre and Vice Director of the Melnikov Permafrost Institute, Dr. Mikhail Grigoriev, and the Chief Engineer of SB RAS, Vitaly Mikheev.
The Samoylov station complex was officially handed over from Spetsstroy Rossii to the SB RAS. As of today, the station has all life-support systems in operation, as well as scientific equipment and vehicles in place. Internet access (wired and Wi-Fi), satellite phone communication, radio and TV are available.

MPI hosts a delegation of the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN) – Russia
On 7 July 2014, representatives of the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN) – Russia visited the MPI to establish contacts and learn about the research centers in Yakutia. The delegation included Dr Marina Sokolova, Senior Innovation Advisor and Tatiana Iakovleva, Senior Science Reports Writer in SIN-Russia, and Hannah Lewis, Second Secretary Energy Efficiency and Low Carbon, Climate Security, British Embassy Moscow. The meeting was hosted by the MPI Director, Dr. Mikhail Zhelezniak who made an introduction on the Institute. Dr. Mikhail Grigoriev presented Arctic research activities at the Samoylov Station. Yuri Skachkov talked about current variations in climate and permafrost temperature in Yakutia and Dr. Viktor Shepelev talked on the effects of climate fluctuations on permafrost and related processes. The meeting was followed by a tour about the Institute with visits to the Underground Laboratory and the Museum of the History of Permafrost Studies.
The Science and Innovation Network (SIN) in Russia, based in the British Embassy in Moscow, was launched in February 2010 in order to further engage Russia’s brightest scientists in collaboration with the very best UK based scientists using targeted programmes and projects funded by BIS’s Global Partnership Fund. One of the SIN Russia’s long term goals is for Russia to be more strongly aware of the UK’s offer as a world-class place to carry out R&D in Space science, Composites, Accelerator science and Arctic/Polar research and Innovation. Also SIN Russia works to encourage Russia to publish more of its research in international peer reviewed journals.

Young Permafrost Scientists Conference Begins in Yakutsk
The geocryological conference has begun today at the Melnikov Permafrost Institute in Yakutsk as part of the Third Forum for Young Permafrost Scientists. The conference will run until the 27th June and cover a broad range of topics, from regional and historical geocryology to safe management of northern infrastructure.
The conference will be followed a field trip to the Verkhoyansk Mountains to examine permafrost, periglacial, hydrological and glacial processes and road management problems in the mountainous environment.
The Forum commemorates the 140th birthday of M.I. Sumgin, the founder of geocryology, and the 150th birthday of V.A. Obruchev, the first director of the Permafrost Institute in Moscow.

‘Geographical Investigations in Yakutia: the History, the Present and the Future’ Conference

The Yakutia Department of the Russian Geographical Society invites to attend a conference entitled ‘Geographical Investigations in Yakutia: the History, the Present and the Future’. The conference will be held in Yakutsk on August 25-28, 2013 hosted by the North-Eastern Federal University. The conference will mark the 100th anniversary since the foundation of the Yakutia Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and welcomes contributions on the history of geographical investigations in north-eastern Russia, Arctic biodiversity and climate change, landscape and permafrost studies, mapping and GIS technologies, geographical education, and socio-economic development of north-eastern Russia.
